Uses of Generative AI

Yesterday, Andrew Orlowski posted on LinkedIn and said:

Generative AI is primarily a tool for creating fakes: you use it to pretend to be something you are not.

I think he was conflating generative AI with consumer / business tools, which use LLMs to generate text, audio and video.

Here are some examples of other generative AI applications (a list compiled using an LLM tool so that I can pretend that I am encyclopaedia of generative AI applications, which I am not):

1: Science

1.1: Biology & Bioengineering

AlphaFold (DeepMind) protein structure generation
AlphaFold 3 generative molecu…

Curriculum Learning in 2014 for BBC Wales...

Twelve years ago, we built a Welsh automatic speech recognition (ASR) system which updated itself every day using synthetic speech. This was a pragmatic hack to cope with a language whose vocabulary changes faster than audio data can be collected.

Today, new research in multilingual speech-to-text translation (S2TT) is using remarkably similar ideas — but applying them at global scale. Looking back, it’s striking how many of the modern techniques echo the Welsh pipeline we built years earlier. See Yexing Du et al: arXiv:2409.19510

This short retrospective looks at what we did, why it mat…

Announcements!

Announcement
Today: New stuff in the repo!
Coming weeks: New competitions!
We are updating our repo today. First we are updating the base script for the first time since launch. We are also introducing the first in a series of security features, to be dropped over the next few weeks.

1 Today's Code Drop

New Base Script: Since launch, miners have massively improved prediction accuracy. So we want to make sure that new miners are building from a better base.
Opt-In Copy Protection: This new feature allows miners choose their own compute service, as an alternative to Chutes. Note that if you h…

25 Years In Speech Technology

…and I still don’t talk to my computer.

Matthew Karas

Oct 26, 2020

This is an essay I wrote 5 years ago - everything has changed since then. I guess the simple explanation is that LLMs make computers worth talking to

These are personal reflections and observations, some of which might seem opinionated or simply be mistaken. Feel free to comment, I probably won’t be offended.

While I was a post-grad at Cambridge in 1994, I was taught by Steve Young and Tony Robinson, who had created some of the best speech recognition systems in the world. Howeve…

Welcome to the Babelbit Blog!

This will be the home for all announcements and news. Some of it will repeat announcements made on Discord or X.com, but it will also include longer pieces about the science behind our work and some of the R&D we are doing in-house.
